2021 World Tourism Day: Osun Govt. pledges to grow the State economy through Tourism.
The State Government of Osun has reiterated its plans and aspirations to grow the State economy through Tourism, which is considered as one of the pillars to create wealth and massive employment for the residents in the State.
Governor Adegboyega Oyetola made the assertion in Osogbo, the State Capital at the maiden edition of the year 2021 World Tourism Day Celebration with the theme"Tourism for Inclusive Growth: The Osun State Perspective". He stated that his administration has been working tirelessly to grow and build the economy of the State around tourism.
The State Governor, who spoke through the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Obawale Adebisi observed that there are tourism potentials in Osun which,if properly harnessed, can be a veritable source of revenue for the State.
Dr. Obawale further disclossd that the State Government has engaged investor partners, especially on the tourist sites that require short term development like: Ayikunnugba waterfall, Oluminrin waterfall, Owala Dam and a host of others.
He used the opportunity to itemize some of the achievements of the State Government like: launch of Vision 30-30, launch of wearing of locally made fabric known as "Adire Osun", with the intention to revive the dying culture of Yoruba and grow the economy without necessarily waiting for Federal Government monthly allocation.
The Ila Orangun born politician therefore appealed to the people of Osun to collaborate with the Government so that its dream could come to pass.
Earlier in his opening speech, the Chairman of the occasion, Chief Amoo Adebowale averred that tourism is a dynamic and competitive industry that requires the ability to adapt constantly to customers' changing needs and desires, as customer's satisfaction, safety and enjoyment are particularly the focus of tourism business.
He added that the industry has become a very significant engine for economic and sustainable growth in many countries, stressing that it is a necessity for development and diversification of the Nigerian economy.
Chief Adebowale further recalled that the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic had a massive social and economic impact on the entire world without excluding the tourism industry.
He admonished all the stakeholders to cooperate with Government in advancing the course of tourism in Osun State.
In their separate Paper presentations, Dr. Nasiru Olawale, Dr. David Adedokun, Prof. Adisa Ogunfolakan, Prof. Ayo Omidire, Dr.Adekitan Kamoli, Otunba Ayo Olumoko explained that the choice of this year's theme was borne out of the need to ensure that nobody is left behind in exploiting the new world tourism potentials.
They advised Osun Government to venture into organising skill acquisition programmes for the unemployed women and youth in the State in order to ensure that nobody is left behind.
They also explained that the influx of tourists add diverse values to the community and influence individuals and family life,stressing that Osun is endowed with numerous Tourism potentials.
The scholers however urged the State Government to accord high priority to Tourism sector as this can sincerely generate revenue to the State, directly or indirectly, adding that the State Government needs to pump more money into Tourism development.
In their separate goodwill messages, the Olona of Ada, Oba Ojo Oyetunde, the Chairman, House Committee on Culture, Tourism and Home Affairs in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Adetoyi Adeyinka disclosed that Government is doing everything possible to develop Tourism in the State by providing enabling environment like infrastructures and other facilities to the host communities.
They acknowledged that God loves Nigeria, especially the South West,in terms of natural endowments such as mountains, waterfalls and others which, if properly tapped can make the State wealthy.
Present at the event were Scholars from different higher Institutions of learning, Cultural Groups, Tourism Associations, Hoteliers Association as well as Management of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in the State.
