Osun Govt. applauds NEMA for provision of free Agricultural imputs.
The Governor, State of Osun, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola has commended the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for providing free Agricultural inputs for farmers whose crops were destroyed by flood disaster in year 2020.
The Governor gave this commendation at the flag off and presentation ceremony held at AISU, Owode Ede.
The Governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Wole Oyebamiji described the action of NEMA as commendable, considering that it is targeted at cushioning the twin effects of the previous year flood and Covid-19 pandemic on farmers in the state.
According to him," Year 2020 was no doubt a tumultuous year for our farmers. Just as we had the debilitating impact of the flood that destroyed many farms, the novel Coronavirus disrupted economic activities around the world in a most unpredicted manner with many businesses and livelihoods significantly affected.
"Our farmers, on account of the restriction in movement of goods and other attendant challenges, were particularly affected occasioning a possibility of failed harvests in many parts of the country",he projected.
Prince Oyebamiji explained that to cushion this effect and ensure that farmers are provided the requisite support to gain stability, it became imperative that government's support for the farmers should be prioritized.
He further hinted that all these, among other deliberate interventions across Agriculture value chain,are targeted at stimulating profitablity in the sector.
He used the medium to appeal to the people to stop dropping refuse into the right of way of rivers and drainages.
Earlier in his welcome address, the General Manager,Osun State Emergency Management Agency, Mr Amos Adejinle, stated that the intention of NEMA in providing the enormous materials for the betterment of farmers cannot be over emphasized, adding that it will go a long way in alleviating their suffering and bringing smile to their faces.
In her opening remarks, the team leader of NEMA, Mrs. Ogunkunle Adenike, who represented the Director General NEMA, Alhaji Mustapha Abeeb Hammed, assessed that the program is the first of it's kind in Osun State.
Alhaji Mustapha Abeeb Hammed further directed NEMA officials and other critical stakeholders at both Federal and State levels to carry out enumeration and verification exercise to ascertain the extent of damages so as to assist the distressed farmers with adequate support.
The free Agricultural inputs distributed were fertilizers,water pumps, maize seedlings, sprayers,and other farm chemicals such as insecticides, herbicides, and growth enhancers.
In his vote of thanks, AFAN Chairman,Osun State chapter, Alhaji Sulaiman Araokanmi appreciated the NEMA, OSEMA and the State government of Osun for the kind gesture extended to the farmers in the State and also pledged their support for both the State and Federal Government.
The event was also witnessed by the Commissioner for Agriculture and food Security, Hon. Adedayo Adewole and his counterpart in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Hon. Tajudeen lawal among other notable dignitaries.
