 Sunday Okunade

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke has disclosed that the administration of the immediate past Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola left a debt to the tune of Four hundred and seven billion, thirty two million Naira (#407.32B) for his administration in the State, without determining the amount owed the contractors.

The Governor disclosed this today at a monthly meeting of the Royal Fathers in the State held at the State Secretariat complex, Osogbo, the State Capital.

He said the purpose of the meeting was to present the official debt profile of Osun  State as at November 30th, 2022, as received from the Office of the Accountant General of the State, to the Traditional Rulers.

He explained that his administration inherited eight outstanding loan facilities from the previous government, apart from salaries and pension debts which is scheduled to be repayed for twenty-eight years.

Governor Adeleke explained that the only fund left in Government coffers as at Monday, 29th November, was for November 2022 salary, emphasizing that the State Treasury was literally empty.

He spoke further, " As your Governor, I will ask questions on your behalf and will demand for answers.

" Governor Oyetola must explain how the #331Billion borrowed in the name of Osun State was expended with no obvious infrastructural development to justify this huge debt.

"Governor Oyetola must explain how the #18 Billion Bridge Loan, taken after he lost the election on July 16, 2022, was expended.

" Governor Oyetola must also explain why Osun State is owing salaries and pensions to the tune of #76 Billion, after collecting a #50 Billion salary bail out loan from the Federal Government.

" The creditors, especially the Commercial Banks must explain why various loans were given to an administration beyond four years. Twenty-eight years is equivalent to the tenure of at least four Governors", He concluded.

The Governor therefore promised to run an all inclusive government, irrespective of political affiliation stressing, that he is determined to move the State forward without allowing himself to be distracted.

He promised to include Traditional Rulers in his government, and to rely on them for invaluable pieces of advice  from time to time, pledging to take good care of them throughout his tenure.

Delivering his Royal speech, the Ooni of Ife, who also doubles as the Chairman of the Council of Traditional Rulers in Osun, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi lauded Governor Adeleke for honouring them by calling for the meeting, observing that no Governor has ever done that in the history of the State. This, according to the Monarch, signifies that the Governor is a transparent leader, who is ready to run a transparent government.

He advised the Governor not not to be dismayed by the huge amount of debt met on ground, but endeavor to hit the ground running by giving the people real dividends of democracy.

The reverred Monarch advised the Governor to give room for local government  autonomy,  promising that the Traditional Rulers in Osun will cooperate and support the administration of Governor Adeleke to succeed in office.

Highlight of the meeting was prayer for the Governor and his cabinet members.
