Osun Govt pledges continued support for RAAMP



...says rural roads are key to economic growth

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke has pledged the support of the present administration to the Osun Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project( RAAMP) because of its critical role as an agent of rural development.

The Governor stated this while delivering a keynote addres at a one day State level stakeholders workshop on Road Sector Reforms held in Osogbo.

The Governor said the aim of the project which is to improve rural access and agricultural marketing as well as strengthening the financing and institutional base for effective development is very encouraging.

The Governor who was represented by the Solicitor General/ Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mrs Morufat Adekemi Bello explained that the importance of road sector cannot be overemphasized to the successful implementation of the project.

He added that the development, management and maintenance of rural and urban roads is one of the top priorities of his administration, hence the need to give full support to the RAAMP project.

The Governor therefore assured that whatever decision taken on the road sector reform during the course of the workshop would be pursued to a laudable conclusion.

In his own address, the National Coordinator Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing, Engr. Aminu Bodinga Mohammed commended Senator Ademola Adeleke for supporting the project with the prompt release of counter-part funds regularly.

He reiterated the interest of the Federal Government to continually support Osun state Government in the area of sector reform under RAAMP project to ensure the sustainability of the road investment.

Engr Bodinga, encouraged the Osun State government to operationalize Rural Access  Road Agency(RARA ) and State Road Fund (SRF), noting that the two institutions will help to sustain the enormous investment on state and rural roads, boost agricultural productivity and alleviate poverty.

In his goodwill message, a top adviser of government on Infrastructure Development, Dr Basiru Salam, explained that rural infrastructural develop is germane to sustainable food production and marketing and as such various Governments in the state and the nation at large must show support.

Dr Salam who was represented by the Coordinating Director, Ministry of Information and Civic Orientation, Barr. Bukola Aderibigbe further explained that the leadership of Senator Adeleke is concerned about the living standards of the people living in rural communities and has set an agenda for rapid development in the area of infrastructural development across the state.

He tasked the participants to look inward and come up with solutions of how fund for the agency could be sourced yearly and also expended with utmost accountability and responsibility.

In his welcome address, the project coordinator , Osun Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing project ( RAAMP) Engr Popoola Rasaq Okediya commended the state for its unflinching support and cooperation to the project in all project obligations .

Engr. Okediya explained that the covenant for admitting the state into RAAMP was that the participating state would pass bills establishing Rural Access Road Agency(RARA) and State Road Fund(SRF) into law within six months of effectiveness.

He highlighted the objectives of the workshop to include: sensitising the stakeholders on the importance of the RARA and SRF, enlightening the stakeholders on the need to discuss the bills and brainstorm on how the bills should be presented to the house of assembly for passage among others.

Also speaking, the Chairman, State Project Monitoring Committee (SPMC) , Engr Olusola Ajao urged participants at the workshop to display dedication and commitment to the development of the State by ensuring that they bring their knowledge and experience to the table.

He assured that no suggestion would be taken as lame, neither will any suggestion be treated as superior to others, saying the intention is to make the bill flawless and realistic to operationalize without any ambiguity embedded.
