New yam festival: Elerinmo, Oba Ajayi charges indigenes on collaboration to develop the ancient town



Indigenes of Erinmo-Ijesa Community in Oriade Local Government Area of Osun State, on Friday converged in the ancient town for the annual "New Yam Festival" celebrated every 21st of July of each year as a way of ushering in the new yam festival in the town.

Most sons and daughters from the ancient town, both home and abroad, usually look forward to this festival which has spanned many years, as it tends to unite and remind them of their ancestral and cultural heritage.
 
This year’s colourful event was held under the watchful eyes of the distinguished traditional ruler of Erinmo-Ijesa Kingdom, Oba (Dr) Michael Odunayo Ajayi JP, Arowotawaya II, as well as the High Chiefs.

People from all walks of life and traditional rulers from neighbouring communities were not left out in the celebration as the people of the town rolled out drums and danced in appreciation of the bountiful harvest, unity and security of the community.

The people, both the indigenes and non-indigene residents of the town expressed their love and affection for their own “Oba Arowotawaya".

As is customary, this year’s yam festival commenced with the colourful processions by various age grades group, decked in colourful traditional attires, praying for the community one after the other.

Speaking on the importance of the annual festival, Oba Arowotawaya said the festival was designed to celebrate togetherness, and to foster peace, progress and equitable development in the town, saying the festival was a reminder of the legacy bequeathed to them by their forefathers.

The Elerinmo called on indigenes of the town to join hands together with him to develop their father land saying home is very sweet.

The traditional ruler also used the medium calling on the residents to be law abiding saying Erinmo-Ijesa community is known as peaceful place everywhere while urging them to be paying taxes and other levies put in place by government.

The programme witnessed the appointment of Mr Muyiwa Ogun who has worked with many multinational companies in Lagos in the past meritoriously before retiring home as the Secretary of Elerinmo in Council as well as launching of an interest-free cooperative society to support small and medium scale entrepreneurs in Erinmo community.

Highlight of the colourful and well attended annual ceremony includes, installation of Prince Jide Agunsoye as the Olori Omo Oba of Erinmo, Re-designation of the Erinmo Elders Council (comprising of aged men and women in Erinmo who are above 80 years of age) as the MAJEOBAJES with Pastor Noah Olaleye Abioye appointed as their leader and coordinator as well as presentation of the newly created Erinmo anthem by pupils of St Peter's Anglican Primary School, Erinmo.
