Osun PHCDB, TCI organize a 3- day workshop on SBCC for Health promotion Officers, other stakeholders

In its effort to promote positive health care delivery and increase patronage of health facilities based on proven theories and models of behavioural change, Osun State Primary Health Care Development Board (OPHCDB) in collaboration with a non governmental organization,The Challenge Initiative (TCI), has organized a 3-day workshop for health promotion officers, primary health care practitioners and the media in Osun state.
The workshop was held between Tuesday 9th and Thursday 11th of May 2023 at the Ideal Nest Hotel, Osogbo, Osun state.
The State Health Educator, Mrs Taiwo Adeniji outlined the four main objectives of the workshop which include: to identify issues on the areas of health promotion and Social Behavioural Change(SBC) in Osun State, to review the National Social Behavioural Change strategy document for adoption or adaption,to develop the Osun State Social Behavioural Change (SBC) strategy document and lastly to inaugurate the Technical Working Group (TWG) that will be working towards the success of health promotion and SBC activities in the State.
Mrs Taiwo hinted further that the programme is going to benefit Osun State through the efforts of the health educators which are paramount to primary health care activities, saying the primary health care without health education and thorough sensitization is meaningless.
According to her, "the health education especially the health promotion aspect pivots the primary health care service activities such as the malaria immunization, family planning and other areas that the health promotion officers are piloting".
In his remarks, the Director Medical Services, Osun State Primary Health Care Development Board, Dr. Adebayo Aderibigbe, who was represented by Dr, Mrs Adeola Aderinwale at the workshop, welcomed all the participants and urged them to pay rapt attention so that the purpose of the workshop could be achieved.
Speaking earlier, the Technical Advisor of TCI, Dr kunle Omotosho hinted that Social Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) strategy is an approach that can affect all other Reproductive Health services which can be achieved through family planning services as an entry point.
Dr Omotosho stated further that in Nigeria, the initiation of The Challenge Initiative (TCI) set up in September 2016, is currently having success in 21 states that have graduated while 11 other states are still under training and the main focus is on family planning.
Also speaking, the Reproductive Health Coordinator,Mrs Toyin Adelowokan,discussed the overview of the health situation in osun on the following: Background, Statistics, Reproductive Health Components, Family Planning, Gender, Equality, Safe Motherhood and Health Promotion For Fundamental sexual Health.
Mrs Adelowokan gave a slogan which says" see something,say something".
In her presentation,The State Family Planning Coordinator, Mrs Abatan Margaret who was represented by Mrs Akinlabi Roseline, discussed on overview of FP situation in osun in which emphasis was laid on family planning as not meant for only married women of reproductive age but also for adolescents between the age of 15 and 19 years that are sexually active.
Also, the Program Officer, Mrs Oladunmoye Bamidele discussed on situation analysis on HIV health intervention
While the desk officer SPHCDB ,Mrs Adeeyo Comfort presented analysis on health intervention on malaria. According to her, "malaria is a disease which most Nigerians are familiar with, besides declining prevalence,studies conducted in the state have shown that less than half of persons who go to hospital to treat fever are detected to have malaria upon test.
Mrs Adeeyo informed the participants that in all the primary health care clinic, malaria test is free while the pregnant women and children should be protected from malaria. She also stated that very soon, the2023 insecticide treated net ( lTN) will be distributed across board in the state.
She then urged the residents of Osun to use the ITN for its purpose upon the distribution in order to eradicate malaria in the state.
Highlights of the event was presentation of the group work and inaguration of SBCC Technical Working Group.
