Fulfill promises made to Nigerians, Hon. Fasogbon appeals to Tinubu
A former member of House of Representatives representing Ife Federal Constituency, Hon. John Olawale Fasogbon has advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to fulfill promises made to Nigerians so as to ease the burden of subsidy removal on them.
The Ife born politician stated this in a statement personally signed and made available to newsmen saying that many Nigerians now face economic challenges as a result of fuel subsidy removal which makes it difficult for them to survive the hardship confronting them.
It would be recalled that President Tibubu in a meeting held with Labour Unions last night promised that the refinery in Portharcourt will start functioning by December, 2023.
Hon. Fasogbon further advised the President to investing in electricity which will boost Nigeria industries sectors thereby creating employment and reduce the cost of products to compete with products from overseas.
The former law maker enjoined Mr President to turn around the power sectors and invest in electricity in the country as this will help to stem economy growth and enable the development of big industries and small scale industries in the country.
According to him, "if there were adequate power supply, the economy will be turned around and it will attracts foreign investor to come down to Nigeria for investment"
He further reiterated that, in the 70s, there was Toyota Nigeria Ltd, Dunlop Nigeria Ltd producing tyres of different types, Isoglass Nigeria Ltd producing Windscreens, Peugeot Nigeria Ltd Assembly, Leyland assembly plus Aswani in Lagos and Aswani production of textiles in Kano,
among other as well as Volkswagen Nigeria Ltd and Exile Battery producing motor batteries of different types but because of unstable electricity in our country, all these factories went to another countries but immediately there is stable electricity now in Nigeria, they will all come back.
Apart from enable force of unemployment that all these factories, industries will accommodate, it also will encourage some business men to start to export all the products they are producing and by the time they are producing all these products in quantities, there will be reduction in what we are importing and by that our foreign exchange will be coming up automatically without been a producing state there is no way our exchange rate will march up with that of international communities.
Hon Fasogbon said what we are exporting must be at level with what we are importing as a nation while on food production, President Tinubu has speaking a right step by his speech and must be followed to letter whereby we have food in plenty and turn Nigeria to food basket of the world and similarly, he must ensure opening of the border and reduce the Custom levy on food and clothing's as well as commercial transportation.
He therefore eulogized NLC, and TUC for calling off the protest so as to give room for dialogue between the labour and Government, saying, if the protest should continue, it can have negative effect on the economy and thereby result to situation not planned for.
The former legislator was an active member of the House of Representatives during the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP) of Chief Monshood Kasimawo Abiola, President Sanni Abacha, President Olusegun Obasanjo and President Goodluck Jonathan's administrations.
