The Commissioner also stated that postpartum hemorrhage, otherwise known as PPH, is a situation where woman dies from excessive bleeding after child birth, thereby causing maternal mortality in Nigeria. He hinted further that the Federal Ministry of Health, with the support from Population Services International (PSI) donated ten thousand pieces of misoprostol tablets to support the initiative in Primary Health Care(PHC) Centers. According to him, the State Government remains resolute to end the preventable maternal mortality using multiple approaches on public and private sectors in the community PHC and accredited proprietary patent medicine vendor ( PPMVS) as well as Pharmacies.
Speaking earlier, the representative of Federal Ministry of Health,Mrs Lola Ogunleye , encouraged pregnant mothers in the State to always deliver in Government Health Care Facilities where the Community Health Officers should also use misoprostol to prevent bleeding after child birth.
Also speaking at the event, the Independent Consultant, Mrs Tinu Tailor pinpointed that the main objective of the meeting is to use misoprostol drugs in our community to prevent maternal death.
Mrs Tailor isolated the reason why pregnant women die after delivery, detailing: excessive bleeding before reaching the hospital for failure to receive adequate treatment, while some do not deliver at the hospital where they can be given misoprostol to stop the rushing flow of blood.
She therefore advised all pregnant women to always approach the hospital on four different occasions before delivery so as to check them for any likely or slightest problem and possible solution.
She urged the pregnant women to deliver in Health Facilities where the health workers can supervise them better.
In her words of advice, the Osun State Reproductive Health Coordinator, Mrs.Toyin Adelowokan advised the Health Personnels to always use the drugs for what they are designed, adding anything contrary is illegal and catastrophic, which attracts the wrath of the law.
Highlight of the event was the presentation of misoprostol drugs to the Permanent Secretary by the PSI and Federal Ministry of Health.
